Sustainability
We then balance these benefits gained versus their costs (first and lifecycle) to determine the appropriate mix for the type of project we are working on and the client’s goals and objectives. We use a number of different rating systems to inform our decisions: the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) guidelines, the US Department of Energy’s and US Environmental Protection Agency’s EnergyStar and Green Globes™ US as well as input from our property management group and maintenance service providers.
We are proud to have developed the first LEED® Gold private-sector project in Yolo County, CA for Digital Technology Laboratory in Davis, CA.
This 71,000 SF office/lab building incorporated some of the following features to earn this prestigious designation:
• extensive daylighting
• 172 kW photovoltaic system that generates up to 25% of DTL’s daily electricity needs
• highly efficient T-8 fluorescent light fixtures with dimmable ballast and motion sensors
• use of rapidly-renewable (cork & bamboo flooring) and recycled-content materials (plywood & carpeting)
• low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in our paints, glues, caulks and sealants
• extensive bicycle parking (52 spaces) and showers
• low-flow water fixtures
• high-efficiency HVAC equipment
• enhanced insulation
• bioswales for filtration of parking lot and roof storm run-off
In addition to these sustainable building features, we recycled 95% of all construction waste generated and implemented a “green” cleaning janitorial process that uses less water and fewer harsh chemicals.
